I want to provide you with a bit more information on Catalino (Tite) Curet Alonso. Particularly I want to share some of the information I found in the web while researching Tite’s life. There is so much to say about great people that influenced music so much like Tite Curet Alonso, that it would take many posts to cover. Instead, I’ll point you to a few articles and videos which go deeper on Tite’s life.

For me, the quality of Tite Curet’s compositions puts him among the top Puerto Rican composers like Rafael Hernandez and Pedro Flores, both of which had international acclaim. Tite Curet wrote compositons for praticular artists, and did it accross several genres, like nueva trova for Tony Croatto (Cucubano), balads for Sophy, Chucho, Nelson Ned, and others, and many “salsas” and boleros. But Tite also enjoyed many types of music. In one interview, you can see him talking and signing (to make his point, not to perform) about colombian vallenato.

The below links have a great full lenght biography on Tite Curet Alonso. The Music of Puerto Rico site has a section on biographies, and Tite’s is included there:

Latin Beat Magazine conducted an extended 2-part interview with Noel Cruz and Richie Viera. Noel Cruz is a renowned news person in Puerto Rico, and Richie Viera is a musician and son of Rafael Viera, owners of the Viera Discos music store, a true collectionist heaven for all kinds of latin music, located in Santurce.

And Aurora Flores provided a written chronicle of the music contained in the double-CD “Tite Curet Alonso, Alma de Poeta”. Here is the link to her article.

One of Tite’s biggest hits was the one he wrote for Cheo Feliciano, and which I mentioned on my previous post, the hit “Anacaona”. The New York Times also did a great article on Tite Curet Alonso’s influence in Latin Music. You can read it here.

Another of Tite’s greatest hits was performed by one of his closest artistic friends, Ruben Blades, singing “Plantacion Adentro”. In this video, Ruben is with his group Seis del Solar, and calls Tite to the stage to do “coro”.

Finally, I also wanted to share another of Cheo Feliciano’s videos, when he highlights Tite Curet before singing the hit “Los Entierros”. Here is the link to the video.

Enjoy!
