Post-Mother’s Day Latin Music Video – Gloria Estefan

I want to share a favorite song in video, and even though Mother’s Day just passed, I’ll still share the video all the same. Gloria Estefan’s “Con los años que me quedan” is a lovely “bolero”, at the trio style. This song was recorded on Gloria Estefan’s album “Mi Tierra”, which was released in 1993, and was Estefan’s first all Latin album. The album also got Estefan her 1st Grammy award.

The “bolero”, as we know it, is said to have its origins in Cuba around 1885. Pepe Sanchez is credited with creating the first “bolero: composition with the song ”Tristezas”. I don’t know the song, but from the title it sounds like a “corta-venas” (wrist-cutter).

The “bolero” was exported to Mexico and the rest of the Caribbean through the Cuban “bufos”, who where performers who pained their faces black (imitating the US performers) and did a show-and-song. The songs were at first Habaneras, later danzones and guarachas, and eventually boleros where included in the mix.

Gloria Estefan’s performance of this song is superb. Composed between her and her husband Emilio, the song suits her voice and style perfectly. Even the late Tite Curet Alonso couldn’t have adapted a song better. The lyrics, the trio music, and Estefan’s voice make this one of my favorites.

The video is a “live” performance of the song.
