Latin Grammys Hangover

Latin Grammys Hangover

Posted on 21. Nov, 2011 by Hector Aviles in Blog

I gave up on Grammy awards or Latin Grammys being a fair competition of the best music a long time ago. They clearly aren’t. Yet, as I watched the 2011 Latin Grammys, I could only watch in attonishment some of the Latin Grammys awarded last week.

Did reggaeton group Calle 13 deserve 9 Latin Gammys? Really? Did they deserve to win en every category they were nominated? Really?

Did Ruben Blades deserve to win a Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album over Jose Alberto “El Canario”’s Original Limited Edition (reviewed HERE) and Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s “Viva La Tradicion” (which won the Grammy in 2011)? Ruben Blades “Todos Vuelven Live” reviewed HERE is a good album, but its an album of old songs. Did it really deserve the Latin Grammy? Really?

Did Paquito D’Rivera’s album “Panamericana Suite” deserve to win a Latin Grammy in both, Latin Jazz and Classic music categories? The same album is the best in 2 different genres? Really? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great album. But…really?

And should Chick Corea win a Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental album over Omar Sosa? Chick? Really? Is he Latino or did he play some kind of Latin music? I must be missing something!

Now..getting off my soapbox…

I’m glad for Shakira to have been recognized during this year’s Latin Grammy ceremony, and for winning Best Female Vocal Pop album for “Sale el Sol”. And for Best Male Vocal Pop, Franco DeVita got the award, saying “I’m glad Calle 13 did not compete in this category”. No kidding, but watch out, as they may also include them in this category next year.

Congrats to Sie7efor Best New Artist. I’m glad a humble creative artist like him got recognized.
As I predicted in my review of Mana’s “Drama y Luz”, they were a sure bet to win a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album by Group or Duo. “Drama y Luz” is an album in a league of its own.

As I’ve said before, take a look at the list of Latin Grammy nominees as it has a great list of great music you can purchase to add to your collection. That’s the real value of the Grammys or Latin Grammys; not who actually wins the award.
